Mills joined the BBC in , hosting the Radio 1 early breakfast show between 4am and 6. Now he hosts the afternoon show with Chris Stark, as well as covering for Claudia Winkleman on Radio 2 and presenting Eurovision. This Saturday, he will present a new morning show on Radio 5 Live with Stark, filling the slot vacated by Danny Baker after he was fired in May over a controversial tweet.
Only Trevor Nelson has until now been a presenter on Radio 1, 2 and 5 Live simultaneously. The new show means the year-old is on air seven days a week. He is looking trim and tanned after a body-transforming health kick over the past few years. Radio 1, at the vanguard of the young UK music scene and a haven for pranks and celebrity gossip, is a very different place compared with Radio 5 Live.
Does the show signal a transition to more sedate airwaves for Mills? On a music station, the amount of time you can talk is limited. Three or four minutes would be considered a long time. This is really exposing, because there is none of that. Being picked as Tune of the Week can rocket an artist into the mainstream. He played Lewis Capaldi just under a year ago. Like, a lot. This is a widespread current usage So is the word "cunt" to mean "idiot" but I can't imagine that becoming acceptable on Radio 1 any time soon. Meanwhile, a report from Stonewall found that lesbian and gay lives were realistically portrayed for six minutes in hours of primetime programming on BBC1 and BBC2.
